WASH: WATER, SANITATION AND HYGIENE

Water, sanitation and hygiene, WASH,  are basic human needs and rights. Our societies can not function or prosper without it. Mina Guli and the Thirst Foundation are hosting the #Sweat4Soap virtual run from the 10th-16th of October 2022 coinciding with Global Handwashing Day on Saturday, October 15th.

We've highlighted leaders who have committed their careers to addressing society’s water, sanitation and hygiene issues.

In this piece, we'll introduce 26 inspiring individuals to you whose work is making a huge difference in ensuring WASH for all.  We will briefly describe what they do, and hear from them about the significance of water, sanitation, and hygiene.

  • Samir Lakhani

    Founder, Eco-Soap Bank

    Samir is an award-winning social entrepreneur dedicated to restoring health and dignity in developing countries. His organisation employs women worldwide to recycle leftover soap scrap for children in need.

  • Joyce Mbura

    Social Runner, TOT RUNNERS

    Joyce, is a passionate human rights water and sanitation champion. For over five years, she has been visiting different villages in Tanzania and doing research into the water challenges Tanzanians face. She has also helped to provide water wells in rural areas of Tanzania.

  • Wilson Atumeyi

    Founder, WaterWide

    Wilson tracks government spending and international aid for water, sanitation and hygiene projects in Nigeria. He is the founder of WaterWide an organisation that brings to light the WASH needs of those in rural communities. He has tallied over 700 million naira through WaterWide and trained 2000 young Nigerians in budget analysis and project management in Nigeria.

  • Kelly Bridges

    Juris Doctor Candidate, University of Chicago Law

    Kelly holds an Oxford University degree in water science and is a board member of the Environmental Peacebuilding Association and the Global Wash Alliance.

  • Clinton Ezeigwe

    Christian Fellowship and Care Foundation

    Clinton works to educate and empower people to adopt healthy hygiene practices and works to provide portable handwashing stations at convenient locations in communities to minimise the spread of COVID-19 and other communicable diseases. He is passionate about campaigning for humans’ rights to safe water and sanitation.

  • Kimberly Worsham

    FLUSH

    Kimberly is a water and sanitation specialist. She uses technology to support getting people better access to clean water and safe toilets. She focuses on the business aspect of WASH.

    Through FLUSH, Kimberly and her associates work to improve evidence-based storytelling for water and sanitation service providers while providing market-based solutions, like market research and landscape assessments. FLUSH also has a library of fun, entertaining events and classes about toilets specifically, for the general public to help spark curiosity and educate about the importance of better sanitation.

  • Paul Gunstensen

    Director, The Stone Family Foundation

    Paul has over 18 years of experience in leadership in the water and sanitation sector with focus on program design, implementation, strategy, and recently philanthropy and impact investment. Over the last five years, he has executed sector-leading innovative finance instruments. He launched the first development impact bond in sanitation ($10M). He also established the Cambodia Revenue Finance Facility, a revenue finance vehicle making impact investments in the water sector ($10M).

  • Catarina de albuquerque

    CEO Sanitation and Water for All (SWA)

    Catarina is an influential advocate for Sanitation and Water for All (SWA)

    Since joining SWA, Catarina has since increased political will in favor of water, sanitation and hygiene, and has positioned SWA as a vital contributor to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6. She was the first UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation and played a pivotal role in the recognition of water and sanitation as human rights by the UN General Assembly.

    Documentary Photographer

    Mayor is based in Lagos, Nigeria. Mayor uses photography and storytelling to help rural communities in Nigeria get access to clean drinking water. He spends time with community members, listens to their stories and photographs them, and then uses the images to create awareness, raise funds and build water projects.

  • Yonah Yangaza

    Mbeya Regional Referral Hospital

    Yonah Eliud Yangaza is a medical researcher, with a bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science from the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Science (MUHAS). He is an aspiring global heath scientist with particular interest in Public health specifically in fighting against Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD). He was the first social medial manager of Africa of the international society of Neglected of Tropical Diseases (ISNTD) of UK.

  • Katrina charles

    Professor of Environmental Health Risks, Oxford. Co-Director of the REACH program on water security.

    Katrina Charles is passionate about reducing the health burden and addressing health equity, particularly for water quality and climate change related threats. With her team, she uses an interdisciplinary approach to understand socio-technical barriers to improving health, working with partners like SafePani and FundiFix to create change.

    WASH Systems Strengthening Champion focused on strategy, planning, advocacy, influencing, partnerships, technical assistance - with the goal of transformative change in water and sanitation service delivery.

  • Nadeem Mirbahar

    IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management

    Nadeem Mirbahar works to restore ecosystems and make both communities and ecosystems stronger. Ecology, the environment, water, biodiversity, climate change, and policy are just some of the things that he is most interested in. He has been a part of the IUCN's Commission on Ecosystem Management (CEM) for West/Central Asia and North Africa. The IUCN is a Swiss-based organization that works with governments and is an observer at the UN.

    The Presider Foundation

    The Presider Foundation is a nonprofitable Organisation that seeks to combat the current sanitation crisis. Their goal is to put measures in place to ensure appropriate ways to manage waste and also to educate the general public on the merits of proper waste disposal.

    They want to establish a sustainable waste management framework starting with the provison of free recycle bins to every part of their city and the appropriate collection and disposal system through strategic partnerships with local waste managers.

    UNC Water Institute

    Dan has worked as a knowledge management specialist for 30 plus years on USAID WASH projects and most recently with the UNC Water Institute.His work has included staying informed about the latest water and sanitation research and sharing this with researchers and practitioners in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Dan has been pat of planning and setting up WASH libraries in Kenya, Nicaragua, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

    West Africa Region (WAR) WASH

    Godfrey provides thought leadership, strategic and technical support to the West Africa Region (WAR) Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) teams in the 9 country offices. He leads collaboration efforts with other technical functions, and networks with relevant donor communities and other external partners to effectively implement defined WASH strategies for the region for the well-being of vulnerable children.

  • Harshit Gupta

    Womenite

    Harshit is an engineer by education and a social entrepreneur by choice. He is passionate about SDG 4 and SDG 5 and runs a non-profit organization: Womenite, to raise awareness on issues like child sexual abuse and gender and menstrual hygiene. Their work has been recognised at various national and international levels. So far, we have worked with 500 schools, colleges, community areas thus reaching out to over 2,00,000 students, youth and women (from unprivileged backgrounds). Hashiet was presented the National Youth Award by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.

    Blessed Health Spring Initiative, Founder

    Blessed Spring Initiative is a youth-led nonprofit nongovernment organisation situated in Ibadan that seeks to prevent diseases, promote health and impact the lives of adolescents. Blessed is a Health Practitioner and Environmental Scientist. She has her works in different areas of Public Health such as Adolescent & Youth Sexual and Reproductive Health(AYSRH), Environment & Health, Climate Change and Water Hygiene and Sanitation (WASH), amongst others. Through the Safe Water Project supported by Share Yourself Initiative, she was able to provide the support to drill a borehole for a community school in Agbamu Community, Sanyo.

    She has implemented and carried out several WASH projects that include supplying schools and communities with bucket, taps, soaps and hygiene materials.

  • Abiodun Aina

    Environmental activist by profession. Climate change enthusiast on youth advocacy programs

    Abiodun is the founder and Team Leader of, Step-Up Green Climate Warriors Initiative. His work focuses on providing access to dignified clean drinking water in water-stressed areas as a result of climate change. He also explores youth advocacy options to educate young environmental vanguards on the climate crisis. His work is dedicated to WASH intervention projects by distributing water filters to remotest villages and proffering solutions to the pressing environmental issues within communities.

    He is the State Coordinator for Sukhi 222 in Nigeria where he is currently distributing over 100 pieces of Sawyer water filters in Northern Nigeria.

  • David DeArmey

    Water for Good

    Supervises Water For Good’s water sector partnerships in the Central African Republic. He works with the Central African water agencies, institutions and NGOs to reinforce coordination and communication to strengthen national development objectives for the water sector.

    Water for Good has a strong focus on the development of a circuit rider maintenance model and supporting the development of local service delivery structures. Through their maintenance program, Water for Good electronically collects maintenance, spare parts, and community data to improve decision making and planning on a continuous basis.

  • Naomi Tulay Silanke

    Community Health Initiative (CHI), Founder and Executive Director

    Naomi Tulay-Solanke is a Liberian Feminist, a human rights activist, and a humanitarian. The CHI is a non-governmental organisation providing healthcare and social services to women and children in underserved and hard-to-reach communities in Liberia.

    She has nurtured a career in female advocacy with a humble interest in working with underprivileged youths and slum dwellers through the provision of advocacy, awareness, and essential health and social services, especially to women and girls. As a Social Entrepreneur, Naomi launched the PAD4GIRLS project, a solution to menstrual health.

    Yusuf has over 22 years of progressive experience as State lead for WASH, Climate Change

    Adaptations, Disaster Risk Reductions and Emergency Response in State of Maharashtra, India, for last 13 years. of which 7 years as WASH Officer and State Emergency-DRR Focal point and then WASH Specialist (from June 2009 onwards), India.

    Head of Country Engagement for the UN hosted Sanitation and Water for All (SWA) Partnership

    Muyatwa works with Sanitation and Water for All - a global multistakeholder partnership with a vision to ensure there is water, sanitation and hygiene for all, always and everywhere. He works with various stakeholders - governments, civil society, private sector, research and learning institutions, bilateral and multilateral funders, utilities and regulators - to mobilise the necessary resources to achieve the vision of water, sanitation and hygiene for all.

    Goyder Institute for Water Research

    Works at the interface between scientific water research and policy and decision-making. Helping to ensure that water management decisions and policies are informed by the best available knowledge. Dr Alec engages with stakeholders across government agencies, research institutions and NGOs, guiding the design of research activities to fill critical decision-making and knowledge gaps, and translating the results of research to inform policy and decision-making processes.
